This project was built for three older couples who wanted us to build them their ‘dream retirement home’. The three couples who commissioned ‘Sunergy Designs’ to design their energy efficient home on the Mid North Coast were all good friends who didn’t want to live in a retirement village, they thought a far nicer option was to be looked after by friends as they aged.
After testing the idea by renting a house in Sydney for two years, the friends moved north to their very own private oasis at Mitchells Island, putting the communal lifestyle they had grown accustomed to into practice for good in the home they’ll probably live in for the rest of their lives.
The home has been designed using passive solar design principles and lightweight materials on a sloping block. The cladding we used was Cypress weatherboards for feature walls on the verandahs along with corrugated zincalume and fibre cement sheet and the hardwood
decking was sourced sustainably from a local timber mill.
The home actually ended up being a far more cost effective option for the couples than building three separate houses on three separate blocks of land. In fact, they have created a small scale retirement home that is very, very comfortable, easy to maintain and suits all of
their needs now and into the future.
